TUMESCENT LIPOSCULPTURE

Tumescent Liposculpture is the most commonly performed cosmetic surgical procedure. It is an advanced technique of permanently removing excess fat in areas that are resistant to diet and exercise. It is called tumescent (which means "to swell") because Dr. Porcaro fills the fatty are to be removed with a special solution before the procedure. This solution completely numbs the area and also at the same time, constricts blood vessels, reducing bleeding to negligible amounts. Fatty deposits are then removed using small straw-like tubes called cannulas. It is called Liposculpture because Dr. Porcaro is able to artistically sculpt your body into a new shape using delicate instruments. The fat that is removed with Tumescent Liposculpture can be used to graft areas where fat may be deficient, such as the buttocks- "buttock augmentation and reshaping" and face and hands (to improve the signs of aging) and the labia majora.

HOW SAFE IS TUMESCENT LIPOSCULPTURE? Tumescent Liposculpture is the safest method of liposuction available. Large studies involving over 15,000 patients reported no hospital admissions for complications, and there were no blood transfusions required. Reported complications were minor and infrequent.

WHY DON'T ALL DOCTORS USE THE TUMESCENT TECHNIQUE IF IT TRULY IS THE SAFEST AND MOST PRECISE? Tumescent liposuction takes about twice as long to perform because the physician has to inject the anesthesia slowly so you remain comfortable and pain free. The physician who chooses to use the tumescent technique sacrifices more of his time to ensure that you will have the procedure performed in the safest way possible. Many physicians are not comfortable performing a procedure on an awake patient. Although there are many skilled physicians in the traditional technique (liposuction) Tumescent Liposculpture is a newer technique and requires extra training for the physician.

WHO IS SUITABLE FOR TUMESCENT LIPOSCULPTURE? The ideal candidate for Liposculpture is a person who is in good health, exercises regularly, maintains good eating habits and is within 10kg of his or her ideal body weight. It is the most effective method for removing localized fat deposits in body areas which will not improve with diet and exercise. It is not a treatment for generalized obesity. The most common areas of localized body fat in women include the lower abdomen, upper inner and outer thighs, hips, waist, buttocks, inner knees, arms and neck. The common problem areas for men include the abdomen, waist and neck. Tumescent Liposculpture allows safe and effective correction of these problem areas in patients of almost any age, from 16 to 80 years.

HOW MUCH FAT CAN BE REMOVED? Up to 4 liters in one session irregardless of what venue the procedure is performed. This is the same amount as with traditional liposuction.

HOW MANY DAYS OF WORK WILL I MISS? Most patients return to work in 1 to 3 days.

WHAT IS THE WORST PART OF THE TUMESCENT LIPOSCULPTURE PROCEDURE? The leakage of slightly blood-stained anesthetic fluid from the tiny 2-3 mm incisions, lasting for about 1-2 days after the procedure. The refinement of not closing these small incisions accelerates the healing process and reduces bruising.

IS LIPOSCULPTURE PAINFUL? There is minimal discomfort during the administration of the anesthetic. You will have the option to have oral or intravenous sedation before the procedure. The procedure itself is well tolerated and many patients compare it to a deep massage. The anesthetic effect can last up to 24 hours.

HOW LONG WILL IT BE BEFORE I SEE NOTICEABLE RESULTS? You will notice a reduction of fat in the treated area immediately after the procedure. Swelling, which is normal , may take weeks to months to resolve. Complete healing may take up to 6 months.

IF I GAIN WEIGHT FOLLOWING TUMESCENT LIPOSCULPTURE WILL I GAIN IT IN THE AREA TREATED? No. The fat cells are permanently removed during tumescent liposculpture, so your treated area can never become as large as it would have been if the procedure had not been performed.

WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL COMMON SIDE EFFECTS: Bruising, swelling and temporary numbness are possible and irregularities in the skin can occur after tumescent liposculpture even though microcannulas are used. These conditions slowly resolve in 12 to 16 weeks with noticeable improvements in 2 to 4 weeks.

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST? It depends on the area being treated. Tumescent Liposculpture  is safer and less expensive than liposuction performed under general anesthesia.

WHAT IS REQUIRED AFTER MY TUMESCENT LIPOSCULPTURE? A garment (like a girdle) will be worn for 2-4 weeks after the procedure. Proper diet, physical exercise and weight reduction (if necessary), are essential to maximize your outcome.
